Perhaps, then, it’s because Batman & Robin sets itself a more modest goal (in that it doesn’t attempt to reconcile every aspect of the character’s seventy-year history) or just because Morrison appears to be enjoying himself far more, but this second act in Grant Morrison’s epic Batman saga is a much more engaging read. Yes, Batman can be the grim avenger or the charming ladies’ man or the camp crusader or the superhero or the urban vigilante or the world’s greatest detective or a swinging icon, but – in reading Morrison’s run – it felt too awkward to make Batman all of these at the same time. It felt a bit awkward and continuity-heavy – don’t get me wrong, I appreciated his attempt to tie together just about every aspect and iteration of Batman ever, but it just felt a bit too much. I didn’t love Grant Morrison’s tenure on Batman. Every Wednesday this month, we’ll have a Grant Morrison related review or retrospective. December is “Grant Morrison month” here at the m0vie blog, as we take the month to consider and reflect on one of the most critically acclaimed (and polarising) authors working in the medium. ![]() 5/21/2023 0 Comments The ride of a lifetime bob iger![]() Its value is nearly five times what it was when Iger took over, and he is recognized as one of the most innovative and successful CEOs of our era. ![]() Today, Disney is the largest, most admired media company in the world, counting Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm, and 21st Century Fox among its properties. It starts strong with bedlam breaking out in Boston, before slacking off a little before King builds and builds towards a big finish. My issue with the book: How come Jordan (a boy) would know what has been going on with the Pulse and how it works with the brain (erase, restarts memory). What caused the pulse is never fully explained, and the survivors have to slowly work out how the phoners work and change. Review: Cell User Review - Martin Sisolak - Goodreads. ![]() What I liked about this book is that it kicks off with fairly familiar zombie apocalypse tropes and settings, but King drip feeds in the differences, adding a sense of mystery and weirdness. ![]() With the phoners sleeping during the night, they navigate the dark and try to figure out what is happening. As time passes they begin to witness that the infected have changed, that there is flocking behaviour and the suggestion of some kind of higher brain function. Several characters appear in more than one story, and through the ways in which they appear at different points in time, their narratives become clear. ![]() The novel is also split into two parts-A and B-which echoes the two sides of an album. Instead, they leap through time, showing slices of different time periods occurring between the late 1970s and the 2020s. The stories, as they appear in the novel, do not follow a traditional chronology. Each chapter stands as a self-contained story, but as a whole, the individual episodes create connections that form a cohesive narrative. A Visit from the Goon Squad is unconventional in the way its narrative unfolds. ![]() 5/20/2023 0 Comments The ninth books![]() ![]() They change sheets, diapers, and bedpans, scrub homes and wipe bottoms. The Little Nursing Sisters of the Sick Poor are not the cruel knuckle-rappers that dominate parochial school fiction. ![]() ![]() Who cares about nuns? Read this book, and you will. The Ninth Hour, McDermott's eighth novel, is about an order of nursing nuns and the needy families, elderly shut-ins, disabled invalids and strapped widows they care for in a predominantly Irish Catholic neighborhood of Brooklyn. And, like Tyler, in focusing tightly on a close-knit community of ordinary people, she leads us to a deeper understanding of the human condition. ![]() In one beautifully observed, quietly absorbing novel after another, Alice McDermott has made the insular world of New York's Irish Catholic immigrants in the first half of the 20th century her own, much as Anne Tyler has laid claim to Baltimore's middle class.
